I've not blogged in ages! And the reason i'm back here is to vent something regarding basic friendliness.
It's normal to meet your friends face to face with a greeting like "Hi Sean" or just "Hi" before you rattle on with what you want..eg.."Hi Sean, have you remembered to bring that CD you talked about?" or "Hi, i'm sorry i wasn't able to get back to you. I was caught up with my work." In real life face to face it's normal to start off a conversation or a connection with the other person with a "Hi" or something of that nature. Usually for me, i find myself using "Yo!", which may be a bad way to start a sentence, but still, it at least acknowledges the other person's existence. Even a tap on the shoulder or a wave is enough to give the same meaning. How would you like it if a friend just comes to you and say "I need you to bring the guitar tomorrow" or something like that. First thought that comes to me is how rude the other person is. Now usually i don't see friends who don't obey this kind of etiquette when meeting face to face.
BUT i see this kind of inadequacy with SOME people during MSN chats. They just msg me without even saying "Hi" and start off the conversation with something like "you owe me $12" or "i caught a grasshopper this morning." Such conversation starters immediately take me off guard and leave me spending more time figuring where his/her manners went to than the actual statement intended by the perpetrator. Somehow when i grow older, i start to encounter more of these "conversation starters". When i was younger i still recall the way ppl start talking to me online - the proper face-to-face way. So when you do want to message me or anyone else, please give some proper greeting because it's so (*^Y*&% unfriendly and rude to start off a conversation that way. Just think about it, if you were msging someone you liked, would you do that? NO! Precisely the reason! Don't be a hypocrite!
Thankfully i do have people whom i can feel proud to know and who value me as a friend. To this they have my respect and it's sure easier to open up to such nice friends.
Until next time..toodaloo..
P.S. Maybe next time i'll talk about basic manners part 2 regarding how to end a conversation properly and part 3 on sms etiquette. If you think i'm being anal..too bad for you coz my motivation is to establish better, more effective and more enjoyable communication which is so basic but unfortunately it has to be retaught to some people.
