Just read today's newspaper. A couple of interesting crime news. First one i read was about the bravery of an NUS undergraduate,A, who caught a molester when he saw him running out of the lift with the girl bleeding and bruised inside. His bravery is really commendable and i ask myself whether i'll do the same thing and with such a quick response. What happened was the molester attacked the girl in the lift and when the lift door opened on the 9th floor, he ran out while A thought both of them had quarrelled. And of course he didn't want to interfere if it was a couple quarrelling. It reminded me of the time when i saw a boy threatening a girl to tears at novena mrt station. I didn't want to interfere as both of them obviously knew each other and assumed they were just quarrelling. Besides, the guy didn't throw any punches at her. So i thought i'll just keep myself at bay. Back to what had happened, A saw her bruises and asked what happened, then the girl said he tried to rape her and that's when A started to give chase. He caught up with him while the police came after a few minutes. I really wonder what's going on in those few minutes the police are on the way. Thankfully, A didn't put up a struggle so there was no brawl and it was stated that both of them waited downstairs for the police to arrive - quite an awkward situation to be in. Both these stories just gets me more prepared to respond to such situations but of course i won't want to get into these kind of sticky situations.
Another story i read was a mad bus driver who ran over a cyclist. There was a lorry parked in front of him and he wanted to overtake it by going to the opposing lane. The sickening thing was he saw a big group of cyclists (40 of them) cycling in the opposing lane and the leader of the pack had motioned to him to slow down and cross into their lane to overtake the lorry. And what did this bus driver do? He just gave the middle finger and continued his way. The poor cyclists scrambled to slow down and to bunch up together so space was given for this errant bus to pass while the cyclists tried to motion him to stop. Unfortunately, the bus banged into a cyclist and dragged him 7m, pinning him under the wheel. One of the cyclist who was a plastic surgeon advised no one to touch the injured fellow. The ambulance arrived after 15 mins while the bus driver and occupants remained inside. And again i wonder the scene during those 15 mins - a tense environment definitely. Based on what i've read, i'd say the bus driver was definitely at fault as he had clearly seen a huge group of cyclists and as stated, he gave them "the middle finger". I think he was either possessed by demons or not happy with his life to do that.
