I had just read about a story in the straits times about a man who fell down in the rain and was left there for 20 minutes without any help. He was in Singapore Island Country Club when it happened and the surprising thing was nobody bothered to help!! Until 20 minutes after when a staff saw him. This immediately reminded me of the good Samaritan.
It's found in Luke 10:25-37. And i decided to read through the story again even though i've read it many times before.
This is my paraphrase. An expert in the law had asked Jesus.."what must i do to inherit eternal life?" Hmm..an expert in the law..i think it means a scholar who knows the Old Testament inside out. I don't know why he asked this question too. Jesus asked, "what do you think?"..then he said ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ This is actually what God wants us to do.
Then this expert continued to ask "who is my neighbor?" Maybe he wasn't really interested in people, so he was trying to ask for an answer hopefully to hear that it would be just a select few that would qualify being a neighbor. Perhaps even the fellow experts would be considered as neighbors only. But ultimately when the story is told, it turns out that everyone is our neighbor. Neighborliness is the practical expression of the principle of love for one’s fellow man.
So in conclusion, love to God(#1 priority!), and love to fellow man.(which can be tough, but we have to push ourselves and pray that we can).
Good night!
